More About Bow Ties
Men’s bow ties are one of the smallest pieces of a formal outfit, but they can make one of the biggest visual differences. From timeless black satin and silk to hundreds of wedding colors, stripes, paisleys, herringbone, textured weaves, and other patterns, the right bow tie can complete a tuxedo, coordinate a wedding party, add personality to prom, or bring the finishing touch to a suit for galas, dinners, and special events.
Why Choose a Bow Tie?
A bow tie creates a distinctive formal look that naturally draws attention toward the face, shirt collar, and lapels. It is the traditional neckwear choice for a tuxedo and black-tie attire, but it can also be worn with suits, dinner jackets, vests, and more fashion-forward formal looks.
Whether you want something understated or expressive, the bow tie gives you an easy place to introduce color, texture, or pattern without changing the entire outfit.
Bow Ties for Tuxedos & Black-Tie Events
For traditional black tie, a black bow tie is the classic choice. Pair it with a black or midnight-blue tuxedo, crisp white tuxedo shirt, formal trousers, and polished black shoes for a timeless evening look.

Pre-Tied vs. Self-Tie Bow Ties
A pre-tied bow tie arrives already shaped and makes getting dressed quick and consistent. The adjustable neckband allows you to fine-tune the fit, making it especially convenient for weddings, prom, large groups, first-time bow-tie wearers, or anyone who simply prefers an easy option.
A self-tie bow tie gives you the traditional experience of tying the bow yourself. Once tied, its slightly individual shape can create a more natural, handcrafted appearance that many men prefer for classic formalwear.
Many BlackTie bow-tie fabrics are available in both pre-tied and self-tie versions, although available styles vary by product.
How to Tie a Bow Tie
Tying a bow tie takes a little practice, but once you learn the sequence it becomes much easier. Start with enough time before your event to practice rather than attempting your first knot while everyone else is waiting to leave.

Black Bow Ties: The Formalwear Essential
A black bow tie is one of the most useful formal accessories you can own. Satin creates the familiar polished tuxedo look, while faille silk, subtle textures, woven fabrics, and understated patterns can add depth without moving away from the traditional black palette.

white dinner jackets, midnight-blue tuxedos, velvet jackets, and many other formal looks.
Wedding Bow Ties for Grooms & Groomsmen
Bow ties are especially useful for weddings because they can connect the men’s formalwear directly to the wedding palette. The groom and groomsmen can wear the same bow tie for a coordinated look, or the groom can use a different color, fabric, or pattern to stand apart while keeping the overall group cohesive.

How to Match a Bow Tie to Wedding Colors
You do not necessarily need an exact head-to-toe color match. Often, the cleanest wedding-party look begins with a neutral or complementary suit or tuxedo and brings the wedding color into the bow tie, vest, pocket square, boutonniere, or other smaller details.

Should Your Bow Tie Match Your Vest?
Matching the bow tie and vest creates a clean, coordinated formal look and is particularly popular for weddings and prom. BlackTie offers many accessory fabrics across corresponding bow ties, vests, cummerbunds, and pocket squares, making coordinated combinations easy to build.
Exact matching is not required, though. You can also keep the same color family while mixing textures or patterns—for example, pairing a solid satin bow tie with a patterned vest or using a patterned bow tie against a simpler vest.

Should Your Bow Tie Match Your Pocket Square?
A matching bow tie and pocket square gives you the simplest coordinated look, but the two accessories do not have to be identical. A solid pocket square can pull one color from a patterned bow tie, while a complementary pattern can introduce subtle contrast.

Bow Tie or Cummerbund?
A bow tie and cummerbund serve different roles and can be worn together. The bow tie finishes the neckline, while the cummerbund covers the trouser waistband and creates a clean transition between the shirt and pants in a traditional tuxedo outfit.
For classic black tie, a black bow tie and black cummerbund create a timeless combination. For weddings, prom, and other events, coordinating colors and fabrics can bring more personality into the look.

Solid Satin Bow Ties
Solid satin is one of the easiest bow-tie fabrics to coordinate. The smooth finish and subtle sheen provide a polished appearance that works with tuxedos, suits, wedding parties, and formal events.
BlackTie’s Luxury Satin collection is available across a broad spectrum of colors and also coordinates with related formal accessories, making it especially useful when you need several pieces in the same color family.
Striped Satin Bow Ties
Striped satin adds subtle pattern without overwhelming the outfit. The tonal stripe catches light differently across the fabric, giving the bow tie more texture while maintaining a refined formal appearance.
A striped bow tie can be paired with a solid vest or pocket square for balance, or coordinated with matching striped accessories when you want a more unified look.
Paisley & Tapestry Bow Ties
Paisley-inspired tapestry fabrics provide more pattern and visual detail than solid satin while remaining appropriate for weddings, prom, celebrations, and formal events.
These styles are especially useful when you want the neckwear to become part of the personality of the outfit. Pair a patterned bow tie with a simple shirt and suit or tuxedo so the pattern has room to stand out.
Herringbone, Woven & Textured Bow Ties
Herringbone, Venetian, silk weave, faille silk, knit, and other textured fabrics offer a more understated way to add interest. Rather than relying on a bold printed pattern, these fabrics create depth through the way the material is woven and reflects light.
Texture can be particularly effective when you want a bow tie that feels distinctive up close while still looking refined from across the room.
Solid or Patterned Bow Tie?
Solid bow ties are the easiest to coordinate and allow the suit, tuxedo, or dinner jacket to carry more of the visual interest. They are especially useful for weddings where a specific color needs to be repeated consistently across several people.
Patterned bow ties bring more personality into the outfit. Paisley, stripes, herringbone, woven textures, and other designs can work beautifully when the surrounding shirt and jacket are relatively simple.
Bow Ties for Prom & Homecoming
Prom and homecoming are ideal occasions to experiment with color. You can match a date’s dress, coordinate with a bold suit or tuxedo, or use the bow tie as a contrast against a statement jacket.
Bright colors, pastels, jewel tones, paisleys, stripes, and textured fabrics all give you more freedom than traditional black-tie dressing.

Bow Ties for Galas & Special Events
For a traditional black-tie gala, the classic combination remains a black bow tie with a formal white shirt and tuxedo. When the dress code allows more individuality, velvet jackets, colored tuxedos, white dinner jackets, and statement fabrics can support a wider range of bow-tie colors and textures.

Bow Ties With Dinner Jackets
A statement dinner jacket often works best with restrained neckwear. Black satin is an easy choice with white, ivory, velvet, floral, paisley, metallic, and other distinctive jackets because it keeps the attention on the jacket itself.
With a more understated black, navy, or solid dinner jacket, you have greater freedom to introduce color or pattern through the bow tie.

Bow Tie or Necktie?
A bow tie naturally feels more formal and is the traditional choice with a tuxedo, especially when the invitation specifies black tie. A necktie creates a more familiar tailored look and works especially well with suits for weddings, business events, dinners, and other occasions.
Neither is automatically better outside a strict dress code. The choice comes down to the jacket, event, collar style, and the personality you want the outfit to have.

How Should a Bow Tie Fit?
A bow tie should sit comfortably around the neck without feeling restrictive, and the finished bow should feel proportionate to your shirt collar and face. It should not disappear beneath the collar or overwhelm the neckline.
BlackTie pre-tied and self-tie designs use adjustable neckbands, with the available adjustment range varying by style. Check the individual product details to confirm the sizing of the bow tie you choose.
Complete the Formal Look
Once you’ve selected the bow tie, build the remaining accessories around it. A coordinating vest or cummerbund can reinforce the color, while the pocket square can either match or provide subtle contrast.

Compare Bow Tie Colors & Fabrics Before You Order
Closely related colors can look very different once satin, tapestry, herringbone, woven, or silk fabrics reflect the light. That difference becomes particularly important when you’re coordinating several members of a wedding party or trying to match another fabric used at the event.
